I want this site to be usable by as many readers as possible, including people using screen readers, keyboard-only navigation, or other assistive technology. I use the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 Level AA as the standard I build toward.
What this site does
- Semantic HTML and a logical heading structure on every page
- A "skip to content" link for keyboard users
- Full keyboard navigation, including the dropdown menus and mobile nav
- Descriptive alt text on cover images and photos
- Touch targets sized to be comfortably tappable on mobile
- Visible focus outlines and ARIA labeling on interactive elements like the review carousel and the newsletter popup
- A newsletter pop-up that can be closed with the Escape key and keeps keyboard focus inside while it's open
- Text and form-field outlines checked against WCAG color-contrast minimums
- Animations, including the fire effects, stop for visitors who have "reduce motion" turned on in their device settings
- Every page checked with automated accessibility tools (axe and Lighthouse) at phone and desktop sizes
Known limitations
Accessibility is ongoing work, not a one-time checklist. If you run into something on this site that doesn't work well with the technology you use, I want to know about it.
Some parts of this site come from other companies and aren't fully under my control: the newsletter sign-up forms (MailerLite), the giveaway entry forms (KingSumo), the spam check on the contact, blog reply, and ARC forms (Cloudflare Turnstile), store checkout (Stripe), and the Amazon, Goodreads, and other sites this one links to. On browsers where KingSumo's entry form can't work inside this site, a giveaway page shows a large Enter the Giveaway button that opens KingSumo's own entry page instead.
Report a problem
Use the contact form and pick "Something Else" from the dropdown, and I'll do my best to fix it.
